| Back | Predator Lamprey
Yes, you read right! Lamprey
are proving to be a top bait among sea anglers looking for bigger
than average fish. Predator Baits lamprey have accounted for
tope, huss conger and rays from the boats, with the same species
taken from the shore, plus three bearded rocking, ling and dogfish.
A conger of 33lbs was taken on this bait from the west Wales
coast recently.
Lamprey are a blood sucking parasite, but thats exactly
why they make such good baits, they are full of smell making
them easily found by hunting fish, especially in coloured water.
For tope, huss and rays, cut the lamprey in to 10cms to 15cms
sections and mount them like the sandeel by threading them up
the hook and on to the hook trace, then securing them with bait
elastic. When using a head section, some anglers prefer to cut
off the head of the lamprey to increase the amount of scent
and blood coming from the bait. The lamprey are tough skinned
and need only minimal elastic for long range casting.
Lamprey also works for smaller species cut in to small 25mms
to 50mms strips. Dabs take it well, as will whiting and dogfish.
