| Back | Predator Herring
A good early season bait for the first thornback
rays which migrate back inshore from February onwards. Thornbacks
like a simple section of bait cut straight through the body
back to belly with the hook just nicked through the back once.
Half a herring, either head or tail section, is a good bait
for conger, huss and ling and will also be taken by tope.
Cut a fillet free
from the body and cut strips of herring 3cms x 1cm at an angle
to make baits for whiting, dogfish, gurnards, haddock, small
ling, brill and cod. Herring strips are especially effective
in the post Christmas period for big dabs, and for megrim, a
rare flatfish found in the deeper water off Cornwall, Ireland
and Scotland.
Herring, as with the mackerel, can be used in small squares
to tip off worm baits to make them more attractive to a wider
range of species. This works especially well for whiting and
dabs.
