Frozen crab baits can give you a big edge
during the late winter months when it will outfish worm baits,
especially over rougher ground. Cod in particular respond well
to it, and it also proves a consistent taker of coalfish, dogfish,
flounders and bass. You dont read about it in the magazines
much, but try frozen peeler for summer and autumn ballan and
cuckoo wrasse from the deep water rock marks as it often outfishes
fresh.
Crab is so effective because of the amount of scent it gives
off when cut. This is the key to getting more bites use
cut crab sections, not whole crabs. For smaller fish like
flounders, simply cut through the middle of the crab body, slide
this over the hook and bind it on with a few wraps of elastic
thread.
For bass and cod, then two crabs cut in half and all four segments
then formed in to a fat sausage shape bound around the hook
will create a bait big enough for the bass and cod to locate.
A bigger bait can pick out specimen sized bass and double figure
cod, but you then need to use a two hook pennel rig for better
hooking ability.
