| Back | Sprats
Sprats ( Sprattus sprattus ) are a member
of the herring family and as such are a small and very oily
fish which make them an ideal pike bait. Sprats are caught around
most of the U.K coast line, but we get all of ours from the
south coast between September and January. The ideal size for
the sprats that we pack, is 48 to the kilo which gives us an
average weight fish of 20gms. The early run of fish in September
is very oily and it is these that we like to pack 8 per pack
as our sprat natural colour. Later in the season, after the
first few frosts, the sprats become far less oily and will then
except the food dyes we use for colouring, gold ( deep yellow
orange ), red and yellow. The dyes that we use are food dyes
and will wash of your hands reasonably easily.
