Baits Mackerel is the common name for any of 48 species of
food fishes having a pointed head, with a large mouth and thick,
narrow body that tapers just before the bi-lobed tail. The Atlantic
mackerel ( Scomber scombrus ) is the species that we at Predator
Baits pack for pike baits It grows to 3lb in weight, has a mottled
green / blue back traversed with numerous black lines and a
silver underside.
The vast majority of the mackerel that comes into our processing
plant is hook and line caught 12 months of the year off the
Cornish coast and are packed and blast frozen immediately on
landing. For the pike baits we use small mackerel with a weight
range of 1.5 - 6oz in our factory these are sorted into 3 sizes:-
1.5 - 2oz for our mini mackerel pack, 2 - 4oz for our joey pack
and 4 -6oz we cut for our mackerel tails pack.
Mini mackerel are one of the hardest products for us to source
due to the legal catch size of mackerel in British waters, as
a consequence 95% of all our mini mackerel are imported from
the French/Spanish fishing fleet and make them, weight for weight,
the most expensive of our mackerel range of baits. Our mini
mackerel packs contain 3 fish of all the same size to give you
baits of approximately the same weight for accurate casting.
Joey mackerel are packed in 3 fish to the pack and again we
endeavour to keep the fish in each pack the same size, though
the size of mackerel from pack to pack will vary.
Mackerel tails are 4 - 6oz fish with the head and shoulder
cut off and packed 4 fish to the pack. These are the heavy weights
of our mackerel range and the best as far as scent is concerned
as the stomach pouch is cut open.
